Start with the provider’s estimate and the patient’s consent
Patients considering crowdfunding should obtain a written estimate of the costs they actually expect to pay. Separate treatment from travel, accommodation, rehabilitation or lost-income support, and deduct confirmed insurance or public coverage. Choose an organiser who can explain the appeal accurately without publishing unnecessary diagnostic details. If the patient cannot consent, establish the appropriate authority to act before sharing photographs, medical information or instructions for receiving donations.
Keep donors informed when the care plan changes
Healthcare estimates can change after further assessment, and a planned procedure may be delayed or cancelled. Explain in advance who can authorise alternative use of funds and how the platform handles refunds or surplus donations. Direct payment to a legitimate care provider may simplify accountability where practical. Do not let fundraising targets become a promise of treatment success, and verify the receiving institution independently before transferring money to an account introduced through social media.
