Start with what the contributor expects to receive
A donation transfers money for a charitable purpose without buying an investment return. Equity participation creates an ownership interest with potential gains and losses, while repayable financing establishes contractual payment obligations. Waqf and zakat introduce additional religious considerations within giving. Combining these categories under a single fundraising total can confuse contributors about whether their money is a gift or capital at risk.
Keep each funding route separately documented
If a project uses both donations and investment, explain the recipient, account, contract and intended expenditure for each route. Do not suggest that investors earn returns because charitable donors absorb ordinary business losses unless an appropriate structure has been independently assessed and fully disclosed. Contributors should understand their own rights before deciding which form of support matches their intention.
